Stetson student shows what it takes to be a leader
By Jessica A. Goldstein

Let's just call her "The Leadership Guru." She's done it all—from attending nine leadership challenge retreats to giving back to her community through, Phi Theta Kappa. She even has time in her busy schedule to be a mentor, teaching students the value of leadership skills.

Jacqueline Morris graduated with honors and distinction from Seminole Community College in December 2002. She has since moved onto Stetson University where she's studying psychology in the hopes of one day becoming a therapist specializing in stress-related disorders. Morris' believes her leadership skills are her biggest asset. "Being a leader is not all about the glory," Morris says. "It's about getting the best from people around you through leading by example, encouragement, hard work, and dedication."

The Leadership Challenge Team at SCC is specifically tailored to the student's needs and helps them increase their confidence by practicing leadership styles and theories in a fail-safe environment. Each semester, a group of eight students is selected from a pool of applicants to become a part of the team. As a member of the team, Morris was involved with in-depth weekly group meetings, discussing team as well as individual growth, delivering presentations, and weekly mentoring sessions with Randy Pawlowski, director of student life. "The one thing I am proud of when it comes to my accomplishments is my ability to accept the unique qualities of others," says Morris. "In the past I've been asked, 'How is it that you always seem to like and be liked by everyone?' And my answer is simple—I see everyone as being unique and interesting and I want to take the time to learn about them rather than make hasty assumptions.'"

Born and raised in South Africa, Morris and her family moved to the United Kingdom for four years before settling in Sanford, Florida. "I believe my biggest challenge was leaving home for the first time," she says. "Before I met my husband, I was a creature of habit. I did not seek change actively, and when things did change, it would take me time to adjust to the idea."

Morris' greatest achievement was returning to school after a seven-year hiatus to pursue her dream of helping people. "I attribute my successes both leadership-wise and academically to hard work, motivation, and dedication," she says. "The people close to me have provided me with the knowledge and skills to be who I am today." With her husband and family members by her side, Morris believes that she can conquer anything. "My husband inspires me to be a better person, and he along with my parents, brother, close family and friends provide me with the emotional support I need to be successful in life."

Being an exemplary leader, Morris has opened the minds of others to becoming involved in leadership activities. "I feel that by taking the time to make myself available to those around me that I have not only left my mark on SCC, but on the community as well," she says.  "The students I've taught will one day graduate and enter our local community, hopefully with a better understanding and appreciation for human beings."
