Accomplishments
1)
Community philanthropy initiated by students
“I brought the
American Cancer Society's Relay or Life onto Saint Leo University. This
event was a huge success and we had 10 student teams registered and a
student affairs team. Over 15 clubs and organizations participated and
raised money for this event. Saint Leo University raised $4000.05,
which was approximately 36% of the total fundraised for the event.
Hopefully, this will be a tradition carried on by future students.”
2)
Student centered leadership conferences
“Instead of just
booking a leadership speaker and having them fly in to speak to the
students for a leadership conference, I planned a fall conference where
it was led by the advanced leaders in the PEAK leadership program at SLU.
It was interactive with breakout sessions and students all worked
together to build their leadership. For the Spring Leadership
Conference, I decided to bring in a speaker who I thought was amazing
when I heard him at a previous conference, but I wanted to change the
location. I brought the conference to the beach!! Again, the conference
was interactive because this speaker puts a lot of interaction in his
speech. Afterward, we had a barbeque, and the students got the chance
to relax at the beach for the rest of the day. It was like a big thank
you for all the hard work throughout the year.”
3)
Student involvement as a whole is increasing
"Since coming
to Saint Leo, I have seen a lot of leadership being developed through
our SGU and have also seen a lot more enthusiasm and participation. It
used to seem that SGU did everything by themselves, but now we have so
many other leaders on campus wanting to help that SGU and student
affairs are not swamped with all the work.”
Why did you become
involved in SG?
"I was asked to
join the Campus Activities Board, and it all started from
there. I loved planning activities for students, so I then ran as
a freshman for the VP of Activities position
on Student Government. Then I was addicted; I
couldn't stop getting involved.”
Who is your role
model?
“My biggest influence
is my family. My parents have always taught me to
strive for the best. They’ve overcome so much adversity in their
lives, yet still work so hard for everything we’ve ever had.
Their actions are so awesome, and they’ve given me everything and
more. They make it all worthwhile.”
What legacy will
your administration leave?
“Be passionate and
love life. No matter what you do, love to do it, and
get others involved.”
How does student
body view SG?
“The student body
looks at our Student Government Union as a group of
students just like them who are willing to assist in any issues
that students face. We’re not a power hungry SGU. We’re ordinary college students who give
a little extra. So, I guess we’re extraordinary!
Students feel very comfortable coming to us.”
Describe your
relationship with the administration.
“I love them! Our
campus administration definitely lives a student first
philosophy. From the Vice President for Student Affairs to the
President of SLU, they’re all here to help the
students. If we have ideas or concerns, they
really work with us. Saint Leo University students are
blessed with the administration we’ve.”
Describe your
relationship with the media.
"Campus media helps SGU to get the word out about our
events. If we need their help, they’re there for us.”
What advice would
you give to other SG presidents?
"Be passionate.
Get involved whenever you can. Get others involved with
you. Be able to say no. Be humbled.
Thank those who help you.”
What are your plans
after graduation?
"I want to go to graduate school and possibly get a job
while attending graduate school. Besides that,
I’m open for suggestion! I’ll figure it out
one day, I believe.”
