WARNING: Good news ahead.
If you’re fed up with the superficial and downright depressing "news" so common in our modern media, Florida Leader has a treat in store for you. Stop reading now if you refuse to smile.
Our 18-year-old leadership magazine purposely chooses to focus on outstanding achievements of both student leaders and colleges and universities across our great state. We don’t ferret out Student Government scandals—your campus papers do a fine job already. Instead, we seek out tangible accomplishments by campus go-getters. We don’t point out weaknesses—we celebrate successes.
If you want to be encouraged, and even heartened, by the hundreds of examples of college and university students and groups who make a difference, Florida Leader’s 12th Annual "Best of Florida Schools" issue will do the trick.
Our editors and staff writers spend endless hours reviewing application packets, checking out campus newspapers, surfing the web, reading last minute e-mail submissions, and bombarding administrators with questions so we won’t miss even one worthy campus activity, group, or project.
Every year, student leaders attempt to out-do the previous administration's accomplishments--not only to get recognized in the "Best of Florida Schools" issue, but to better their entire campus body's educational experiences. These Florida leaders' hard work has resulted in nearly 140 "Best of" categories—the most ever—some of which can be found exclusively at our web site, www.floridaleader.com, which also offers expanded versions of most of the categories in this magazine.
Florida Leader hopes our "Best of Florida Schools" awards help campus leaders statewide, including SG leaders, newspaper editors, lobbyists, coordinators, officers, and members of clubs and organizations, get the pat on the back they deserve. And you, dear reader, can steal-- we mean borrow—some of the innovative ideas inside and implement them on your campus.
There's never a wrong time to submit information about your organization or school for the 2002 "Best of Florida Schools" issue. Just contact our editorial team at (352) 373-6907 or toll-free at (888) 547-6310, e-mail Associate Editor Stephanie Reck at info@studentleader.com, or download applications for the 2002 Awards at Florida Leader's web site, www.floridaleader.com.

Editor's Note: Each "Best Student Government" entry is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The editors research and assess each organization's ability to identify and address student concerns, implement innovative programs, control wasteful spending of student dollars, and network with administrators and other student groups on campus and across the state. In addition, preference is given to SGs that can demonstrate vast improvement in all the areas above. Florida Leader verifies each SG's claim through numerous reference checks with administrators, student journalists, organization officers, and other interested parties.
